Iceland under Allied military occupation. Britain invaded pre-emptively on 10 May 1940 (Operation Fork) to deny the island to Germany; the United States took over the garrison on 7 July 1941. Iceland retained its own government throughout and became a republic in 1944.
Occupation wound down at the end of the war (1945-46); Iceland had already become a sovereign republic in 1944.
