Ahtna

1000 – present
Native nationNorth America

Dene of the Copper River basin, controllers of the native copper trade who guarded the river so fiercely the Russians twice failed to settle it.

The Ahtna destroyed Russian posts on the Copper in 1795 and the 1840s and held the valley until the 1898 Klondike-era stampede and the Kennecott copper boom; they govern the basin through Ahtna, Inc. to 2026.
