The Aghlabid Emirate was overthrown in 909 AD when the Isma'ili missionary Abu Abdallah al-Shi'i led Kutama Berber forces to defeat the last emir Ziyadat Allah III at the Battle of al-Aribus on 18 March 909; Ziyadat Allah III fled toward Egypt and the Fatimid caliph Abd Allah al-Mahdi was publicly proclaimed in January 910.
