The short-lived Afsharid Dynasty was founded by the brilliant military leader Nader Shah, who temporarily forged the largest empire in Iranian history since the Sasanians before his assassination plunged Iran into civil war.
Collapsed after the assassination of Nader Shah in 1747 CE, with the empire fragmenting; the last Afsharid ruler Shahrokh (who had been blinded by rivals in 1748, early in his own reign) was tortured and died of his injuries in 1796 when Agha Mohammad Khan Qajar seized Mashhad, ending the dynasty.
