British possession on the southwestern Arabian coast, held first as a dependency of British India (Aden Settlement/Province, 1839-1937), then as its own Crown Colony (1937-1963) with a surrounding Aden Protectorate (1869-1967) of allied sheikhdoms and sultanates.
Absorbed into the Federation of South Arabia and then the Protectorate of South Arabia amid an armed insurgency; British withdrawal completed 30 November 1967, becoming the People's Republic of South Yemen.
