Adamawa Emirate (Fombina)

1809 – 1901
EmirateAfrica

The largest emirate of the Sokoto Caliphate, a Fulbe conquest state on the Benue and the Adamawa plateau that reached deep into modern Cameroon.

Partitioned on paper by the Anglo-German boundary agreements of 1893-94, the emirate lost its eastern districts to German Kamerun and then its capital: Yola fell to a British expedition in 1901 and the last sovereign Lamido, Zubeiru, was driven out. Adamawa survives as a non-sovereign traditional emirate within Nigeria.
